When hope can’t

We all read inspirational poems, stories, quotes about how wonderful hope is.

If those are your thing – come back in a couple days and I’ll post something more HOPEful.  But today?  Today you may want to skip over.

When hope can’t

Hope can’t move mountains.

Hope can’t change predictability patterns.

Hope can’t tempt chance.

And hope most certainly can’t take away the pain when those you want so desperately to help you,
to be there for you,
to understand you,
to feel your heart,
to share your burdens…

Hope can’t take away the pain when the ones you love most let you down.

Hope can’t help you.

But boy oh boy it sure can hurt you.

Makes me wonder why I bother hoping at all.

For years I’ve thought of myself as an optimist, but I’m starting to think I’ve either always been or I am becoming a pessimist (although, like all pessimists, I would rather if you called me a “realist”)

For example, most poems about hope and how much it can do for you and how all you need is hope and blah blah blah.. they leave me feeling nothing at all. I don’t agree with or relate to the words in front of me.

But then I read this and I go “Yes! That’s exactly it! That’s what hope is right there” and I wonder if I’m caught in the captivity of negativity.

Whatever. I enjoyed the poem and that’s all that matters.
