Perfume: The Story of a Murderer Part II (because apparently the first time I missed it)

SNAP!  Holy WOW.  Ok so a long time ago I blah blah blahed about how I HATED the book Perfume: The Story of a Murderer – it was GROSS and completely demented.  Well today someone left a comment explaining the book to me.  I just want to say THANK YOU to Emily because she was so polite and thoughtful as she pointed out how I completely missed the entire point of the book.  [lol and sheepish look as I am quite embarrassed by this.]

Umm … yeah …  I still think the book is gross, gross and more gross.  I still am put off by the graphic ending and think the author could have probably made his point without having a dude with no smell kill off 25 fictional girls, leaving their fictional families understandably traumatized – BUT – I can now see how the book took a look at society as a whole.  People tend to minimalize even the most atrocious of deeds if they themselves played any part in them and when similar atrocious deeds are committed without a suspect they victimize and criminalize innocent parties.

And a whole bunch of other stuff that I WOULD explain but honestly I have a headache and can’t be bothered to recap so if you are THAT interested in the book you can read the comment linked above OR maybe I’ll do a REAL analysis of the book in the future.

Alrighty well I’m off to bed.  BUT FIRST – last night I talked to N. Syd for like 3 bajillion hours because we had a complete role reversal and he played counselor to ME (usually I play counselor to him) and that was WEIRD but helpful. Basically I need to learn to not be so hard on myself.  8o| GRR!!!  It’s not easy!!!!

Oh and I have plans to see #3 on Thursday.  And was invited to play with N. Syd on Sat. because he has his adorable son that night but I think I have plans with a cute girl from school – we’re going to a party where I should be able to catch up with BFA and #3 – AGH!!!  Sleep tight everyone!!  xoxo

  1. I really do feel like I’m reading a book sometimes when I read your blog and I’m waiting to find out what happens to the main character… “who will she choose?” :)

  2. I miss the point of books all the time. I mean, I enjoy reading them, but afterwards people are like “What was it about?” and I’m like “I dunno”

Or someone will say “Don’t you love how..” and I’ll be like “Oh really? I didn’t get that”

Numbers are my thing. I don’t have to be smart with words.

Sounds like you have a fun weekend planned!

  3. Haha! This reminded me of the movie “Sixth Sense”-you know where the little boy sees ghosts? Well when we watched the movie I was like ‘huh?’ and then a few weeks later a friend tells me that Bruce Willis was a ghost through the whole movie and I was like “OoooohhhH! I get it now!” lol!
